Long Island sits directly in the path of Atlantic storm systems, and late summer through early fall is when the risk peaks. Between coastal flooding on the South Shore, wind damage inland, and the power outages that follow, a single storm can cause tens of thousands of dollars in property damage — much of which is preventable with the right preparation.

Here is what every Long Island property owner should do before the next storm, and what to do the moment damage occurs.

Before the Storm: Exterior Preparation

Most storm damage that we respond to begins outside the home. Water finds a way in through the roof, windows, and foundation, and once it does, the damage compounds quickly.

Understand Your Insurance Before You Need It

This is where Long Island homeowners get caught most often. Standard homeowners insurance typically covers wind damage and water that enters from above — a roof leak, for example. It generally does not cover rising floodwater from outside the home. That requires separate flood insurance.

If you are in a flood-prone area of the South Shore, review your policy now rather than after a storm. Flood policies also commonly carry a waiting period before coverage takes effect, so buying one as a storm approaches will not help.

The First 24 Hours After Damage

What you do immediately after a storm has a direct effect on both the extent of the damage and the strength of your insurance claim.

  1. Confirm it is safe. Stay away from downed power lines and never walk through standing water that may be electrically charged or contaminated with sewage.
  2. Document before you clean. Photograph and video everything — every room, every damaged item, the exterior, the source of intrusion. Do this before moving or discarding anything.
  3. Stop further damage if you safely can. Tarp an open roof, board a broken window, shut off water at the source. Most policies require you to take reasonable steps to prevent additional damage.
  4. Call your insurance company. Report promptly and get a claim number.
  5. Call a restoration company immediately. Do not wait for the adjuster. Water damage worsens by the hour, and mold can begin growing within 24 to 48 hours.

Why Waiting Costs You

The single most expensive mistake we see after a storm is delay. Standing water saturates drywall, subflooring, and framing. Insulation holds moisture against the structure. Within two days, what began as a water problem becomes a mold problem — and mold remediation adds significant cost and time to a job that could have been handled with extraction and drying alone.

Restoration companies also get busy fast after a major storm. Calling early puts you in the queue before demand spikes across the region.
